Miss Carrie Fund – Donations Needed

Until 2018, you could find Miss Carrie Johnson on her decorated trike giving blessings and hugs while greetings of “Hello darling” rang in the air. She was sweet and fierce; “I’m made of tough cloth, don’t pamper or shield me from anything, for God is my protective shield”. Miss Carried held a Biblical truth in her being and lived 83 full years.

A 2015 St. Augustine Record honoree of “10 Who Make a Difference,” noted that not only did Johnson organize carolers, serve the homeless, champion Civil Rights history but she also established Miss Carrie’s Foundation for Homeless Students, to provide resources for the youngest of the county’s most vulnerable residents. The St. Augustine High School Alunni Association’s Miss Carrie fund is an extension of her love for others and her compassionate spirit. Defying odds she garnered achievements that typically only politicians can claim, like establishing the Freedom Trail monuments. Miss Carrie believed you could undo racism one person at a time.

A letter from historian, Pat Nolan reflected on a few more Miss Carrie highlights, when she helped in the foundation of the Anniversary to Commemorate the Civil Rights Demonstrations, or ACCORD, organization and served as vice president of the Fort Mose Historical Society.
“It would take an encyclopedia to list all of the community events where she was a major speaker or organizer or singer,” Nolan wrote. “Suffice it to say that she was an inspiration to all, encouraging everyone to do their best — and more.” “She put the ‘saint’ in St. Augustine,” he stated.
